5.4 earthquake rattles Papua New Guinea- exposes growing danger for region

February 18, 2011 PAPUA NEW GUINEA – The 5.4 earthquake which just struck the New Ireland region of Papua New Guinea at a depth of 56 km exposes the growing dangers of a region where the destructive plate boundaries of the Australian and Pacific plate meet. If we follow the depth color scheme of the seismicity around Papaua New Guinea over a 21 year period, we can get a glimpse of the violence forces that is insidiously cracking the lithosphere along this v-shape plate boundary.
