Heavy snow crush barns and endanger livestock in Northeast U.S.

February 10, 2011GREENWICH, N.Y. (AP) – Three counties north of Albany are seeking a federal agricultural disaster declaration to free up funding for farmers who suffered property damage from heavy snow. Over the last week, 18 barns and sheds have partially or completely collapsed on 14 farms in Washington County. If approved in Washington County, the disaster declaration would make emergency loans up to $500,000 available to the damaged farms. In Saratoga County, about 600 cows were in a barn at the King Ransom Farm in Northumberland when it crashed to the ground last week. The death toll from that collapse may reach 100 as the injured continue to succumb. Washington, Saratoga and Rensselaer counties took the first step in the disaster declaration process this week by filing an initial loss-assessment report. –WCAX
