Earthchange: Unusual storm system moves backwards across continental U.S.

July 25, 2013 – TEXAS – On July 14, a low pressure system that started in the Eastern United States retrograded under a ridge of high pressure to the north over the last couple of days. This storm system moved from east to west, which is extremely unusual for this hemisphere. We’ve seen these move east to west for a short period of time, but this one will make it to Southern California by the time it weakens. The upper level system is known as an easterly wave; however I’d like to call it a super easterly wave based on the distance it is going to travel. This particular system will have traveled from one side of the country to the other once it has stopped moving west, diving from there into Mexico, gathering up monsoonal moisture to be put into Nevada and Southern California later in the week into next week. Rainfall estimations across parts of Central Texas could be over 2-4″ of rain, with more rain (above 6+” possible in parts of South-Central Texas. Severe storms, including tornadoes, hail, and damaging winds will be possible from Texas, New Mexico, and parts of Arizona through the next few days. –The Weather Space

    VERY STRANGE!! The weather patterns lately seems to support the theory of a pole shift. I have noticed this reverse weather here on the east coast and have remarked to others about it, only to be ridiculed and called a conspiracy nut!! It doesn’t bother me cause in the end they wil see!!!

      Me Too J! I used to tell people that this was going to happen and they made fun of me! East coast where I live is turning tropical. We have had the worst humidity we have ever had and strange monsoon-like downpours! I am excited 😀 as I think it is cool~~~ and for all the people that made fun of me, ridiculed me, called me a conspiracy theorist to them I say–I told you so!

    What is a bit abnormal about that system was not that it was going from east to the west but rather the high latitude that it moved westward in. Normally these westward moving waves are much farther south such as on a line from the Bahamas westward to the southern Texas coast. This means that the upper air high pressure ridge was also riding far to the north which would bring very warm temperatures farther north than usual, well into Canada.

    I’m a little confused, though it does somewhat appear to be a strange storm of sorts, aren’t hurricanes low pressure systems that also move east to west? I live on the south east Texas coast and a low pressure system moving east to west does not seem that out of the ordinary to me. I’m also not a weather buff, so I’m sure there is a technicality that I am missing. Interesting post nonetheless. Thanks.

      It has to do with what’s known as “prevailing winds” which blow from West to East across the continental U.S. – hurricanes are subtropical and would blow from East to West, but after they cross the Atlantic basic and hit the continental U.S.- they are always blown East across the Atlantic, towards Europe, because of the prevailing winds and something called the Coriolis Effect.

    Freaky, and actually a bit high on the worrisome scale!!

    I watched this storm move westerly toward Colorado. I have seen a few storms move up to the Continential Divide but when this one crossed over the Divide (really a geographic and atmospheric impossibility), I feel concern that global climate change may have altered the way in which trade winds and the oceananic currents flow.

    This would have seriously freaked out my mom. She always said that weather moving east to west was a sign of Revelation. *shrug* I was able to comfort her by telling her that SURELY that would be a change in total weather patterns as in the jet stream changing direction, but I really have no clue.

    Never did figure that one out… how regular weather moves.

    The sun ‘rises in the east’, which means that the planet turns left to right… i.e. coming at us on the left side, and going away from us on the right side. Because of this movement, I would naturally think that all weather would move east-to-west / right-to-left. It’s strange to me how it works.

    This was a very unusual system but it seemed to me more of an upper level low from the Canadian Maritimes (cold core low) as opposed to an Easterly Wave (warm core), that broke off from the Westerlies and went from east to west across the United States. I’m down here in far West Texas and it brought unusually cold weather for this time of year with highs in the low to mid 70’s when typically we would be in the middle to upper 90’s. Additionally, it brought welcomed rain and in its wake the atmosphere has remained unsettled with a prolonged wet pattern which continues today, July 25th.

    extremely unusual? idk, i think i’d say more extremely bizarre. how is this even possible? have the poles drifted so far, that all bets are off as far as what can be expected with weather progression?

    Does this have to do with the North Atlantic Current?? With all that ice melt and freshwater entering the ocean can this be having a negative effect ion it? Because the currents do control our weather patterns…

    Yesterday, we had one of the worst storms here in New Mexico. Granted it is monsoon season so sudden downpours are expected, but I have never seen anything like that in all of the years I have lived here. An emergency severe flood warning was sent out, and within 15 minutes or so, the rain came down. I was in the store when this happened and I could not believe what it looked like outside when I left. I called my husband from the lobby and said that it looked like a hurricane out there. I had to walk about 50 ft to get to my truck and I was completely soaked from head to toe. The wind was awful. The news later reported category 1 hurricane winds. Power was out for many residents, and trees had been completely uprooted. Funnel clouds had also been spotted. The night before that, we had an extreme electrical storm. The lightning would light up the sky to the point of it looking like it was daytime outside. I have never seen the weather like this here. And it’s making me feel very uneasy..

    Has anyone heard that the BP oil disaster in the Gulf has stopped whats called the “loop current?” I read about this several months ago and it stated that if the loop current didn’t re start that it would disrupt weather patterns globally. If so, could it be the reason for this type of weather anomaly?

    Been watching this tropical storm since Monday… It seemed at first to possibly weaken before it hit Hawaiian waters but has strengthen over a few days and almost turned into a hurricane Thursday night. I’ll copy/paste of of the news links. Hopefully it’ll dissipate but I just got a notification of it strengthening slightly.
