Global temperatures hit 4000-year high, rate of increase fastest in 11,000 years

March 9, 2013CLIMATE - Greenhouse gases and thus temperatures are skyrocketing and will most likely reach epic proportions by the year 2100, scientists at Oregon State University and Harvard University have found. Funded by the National Science Foundation’s Paleoclimate Program, and published in the March 8 issue of the journal Science, the study covers 11,300 years and finds temperatures higher than they have been over 70 to 80 percent of that time, OSU said in a statement on March 7. A team headed by Shaun Marcott, a postdoctoral researcher in OSU’s College of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Studies, reached further back than most other studies, which he said usually don’t go beyond 2,000 years ago, to give the current climate change issues some context. They studied data from 73 sites around the world, to tell Earth’s temperature history back to the end of the last Ice Age. The current age, called the Holocene, began when the great ice sheets of northern Turtle Island and Europe receded. What they found may well heat up the climate change debate. First, Earth cooled about 1.3 degrees Fahrenheit for most of the past 5,000 years, but warmed back up by the same amount over just the past 100 years, the researchers said. And the bigger the land masses and the larger the populations, the warmer it got—as in the Northern Hemisphere. Predictions from climate change models expect the temperatures to increase another 2.0 to 11.5 degrees by the end of the century, the OSU statement said, “significantly greater than at any time during the past 11,300 years,” said Peter Clark, an OSU paleoclimatologist and co-author on the Science article, in the statement. “We already knew that on a global scale, Earth is warmer today than it was over much of the past 2,000 years,” Marcott said in an OSU statement. “Now we know that it is warmer than most of the past 11,300 years. This is of particular interest because the Holocene spans the entire period of human civilization.” Moreover it’s an anomaly because of the speed with which it is happening, said Candace Major, the program program in the National Science Foundation’s Division of Ocean Sciences, which funded the research along with NSF’s Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences. Breaching the Holocene’s temperatures would be a first, the scientists said. Although 2000–2009 was one of the warmest since the U.S. started keeping records, the temperatures have been lower than the age’s overall. But no more. “The last century stands out as the anomaly in this record of global temperature since the end of the last ice age,” said Majo in OSU’s statement. “This research shows that we’ve experienced almost the same range of temperature change since the beginning of the industrial revolution as over the previous 11,000 years of Earth history—but this change happened a lot more quickly.” –Indian Country

This is nothing but junk science and lies with a premediatated conclusion and agenda. Yawn.

  2. Joseph t. Repas says:

Back in the 1980′s ” scientists” were screaming that we were about to enter the next ice age now they scream the atmosphere is too hot. The temperatures near the north pole have been -40 to -50 degrees F most of the winter. Much of Canada is -20 to -30 F or lower. My heating bills are too high. I understand that our friends in Australia have just had a tough summer and I expect a hot summer for much of USA this year. I am glad that Alvin put this story right next to the ICE island in Michigan; perhaps somewhere in the middle is the real truth. I believe the Earth is heating but from the inside, not the outside.

  3. TexasRedNeck says:

and all this time I thought the earth was only 6,000 years old !

  4. pauly says:

If you want to debate, go for it. Otherwise my professional opinion is, GW is BS and I have the proof.

I think the moral of this story is climate confusion or extreme vacillation. In my mind, we should be caught up in the warning; not the debate. Climate change was a phenomenon that was a prelude to many of the extinctions in the planet’s past, including the Permian.

Your correct gw is lies and its been proven. The reason alot happening comes from volcanos . They are the key to the weather. Not something man or God does . Sulphur rises and cools plannet as it reflects the sun rays . And recently there have been lots of volcano activity . Could also be something to do with magnetic fields one thing we do know is its not Global warming

  5. John says:

OK…so which is it? I hear some scientists saying that we are heading for an ice age, now this article says Global Warming. Will somebody please make up their mind.

  6. Helen Parks says:

With the Gulf Stream reversing – all this will be past tense

  7. Robin says:

I don’t think they know…what seems to be happening, has never happened before..

    • yeye says:

Yees! That’s what i think too…A lot of the stuff going on in the world right now didn’t happen before… nothing positive for sure.

  8. michele goodloe says:

From what I have read…the warming of the earth is causing the glaciers to melt which causes a rise in water levels. Then the cooler water is heavier so it sinks and is messing with the ocean currents that determine certain areas weather patterns. There is also more water in the atmosphere that is contributing to more weather extremes such as tornadoes, hurricanes, and snow events. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that something is wrong and out of balance on this planet that we ALL share. Reguardless of common sense beliefs or religious beliefs or whatever the case…the earth is changing!!! And to think that we are sooooo smart that we can’t become extinct like past generations and species just makes my head spin. If we can’t all get along and work together…then we’re doomed either way. This planet is going to do what it wants when it wants. One day (and probably sooner than later) OUR time will be up. Then whatever is left will start over and advance to something else. We play with the weather,DNA,bacteria, and virus’s. There are just some things not meant to be understood or played with. So global warming vs. Ice age is irrelevant. Who says one doesn’t eventually cause the other??? Just something to think about folks.

  9. Me says:

This is not science…this is SHAM WOW.

  10. tonic says:

The amount of water the Earth contains has not changed. Well, for quite a long time anyway.
Only its distribution around the planet has changed.
These changes are all occuring with an increse in co2, the Suns decreasing activity, and the Solar Systems position within the Galaxy. But as a scientist would say, “Its just coincidance, and we (humans) are prone to joining up unconnected dots in a crisis” It’s co2, nothing else……OK?

  11. Dennis E. says:

It is going to get hotter. A few years ago, person who had worked at Nasa wrote a book called COLD SUN in that the sun was going into Hibernation and the earth was going to experience a mini ice age or a time of extreme cold weather?
Just this past week, there was reports of a release of methane gas in the L.A. area and Jamaica. Scripture do say that the sun will become so hot that it will burn man’s skin; So the ozone layer will have been damaged more than it is now.
I would not want to be striving for a sun tan in this day and time.
In Alvin’s book, it states the oceans would heat up due to the under water volcanoes as one reason.
Perhaps it is true that volcano action could hamper the temperature, but in my opinion it would take a large volcano and a big bang like occurred in the 1800′s….

  12. nicolas chong says:

    10,000 years is an exaggeration
This article is written by Evolutionist .
Earth is only 6000 years old according to the bible .

    • stewology says:

Lol 6,000 years ago is probley when we first learnt to write earth is old before God . He just came and claimed the credit i think.

  13. Guest says:

Have you considered that the HOT radiation like Plutonium, Uranium, Strontium, etc. that blanketed the globe from Japan’s nuclear meltdowns has had an affect on the climate? Record-breaking droughts, tornadoes, storms, heat ever since March 2011. In old records found on weather after the U.S. was doing atomic testing, they observed the same weather patterns. A lot of discussion on this on E N E N E W S (dot) c o m and Radchick on Facebook.

  14. richard says:

This is bogus. The weather is abnormal, but it is because of the abuse of science and technolgy. It has consequences. We are in for a giant freeze. This propaganda is telling us all to get our suntan lotion out. My advice is to get yourself a very good pair of boots and learn how to plant potatoes. If you end up in a warm place, lets hope it is not one that is being nuked or hit with an asteroid.

  15. Chelle says:

Climate Extremes not Warming is the term which should be used and yes Methane is a problem. Thus I was hoping for a mini ice age as this may be mother natures way of dealing with the problem vs project Lucy. I’m not on board with geo-enginerring but seeding the clouds has been happening for decades. All I know is our planet is rapidly changing and thanks to EP for keeping us informed.
