Scientists probe link between magnetic polarity reversal and heat in planet’s interior

August 3, 2012 EARTH - Scientists at the University of Liverpool have discovered that variations in the long-term reversal rate of the Earth’s magnetic field may be caused by changes in heat flow from the Earth’s core into the base of the overlying mantle. The Earth is made up of a solid inner core, surrounded by a liquid outer core, in turn covered by a thicker or more viscous mantle, and ultimately by the solid crust beneath our feet. The magnetic field is generated by the motions of the liquid iron alloy in the outer core, approximately 3,000 km beneath the Earth’s crust. These motions occur because the core is losing heat to the overlying solid mantle that extends up to the crust on which we live. The mantle itself is also in motion but at much slower speeds of millimetres per year as opposed to millimetres per second in the core. This mantle motion is responsible for the drifting of the continents at the surface as well as earthquakes, volcanoes, and changes in the climate over millions of years. At intervals of hundreds of thousands of years, the North and South magnetic poles reverse and scientists can tell from rock formations precisely at what periods in the past this took place. The most recent reversal happened 780,000 years ago. Magnetic field variations happen on timescales of months to millions of years. Much of the magnetic field’s variation is thought to be sporadic but new research, led by Liverpool scientists, has found that over long timescales, this variability may be related to the changing pattern of heat loss across the core-mantle boundary occurring over millions of years. The team performed a detailed synthesis based on latest findings from a number of different areas including the ancient geomagnetic field and its record in rocks, motions in the mantle caused by motions of the continents and the process responsible for generating the magnetic field in the core. Dr Andrew Biggin, from the University’s School of Environmental Sciences, said: “The magnetic field has undergone big changes in its behavior that might be due to the mantle’s controlling influence on the core. In particular, we focused on the time interval between around 200 and 80 million years ago – when dinosaurs were still around – when the magnetic field initially started reversing its polarity very frequently. During this period the polarity was reversing up to 10 times every million years; however 50 million years later, it stopped reversing altogether for nearly 40 million years. “When these changes in the magnetic field were taking place, the whole of the Earth’s crust and mantle, including all of the continents, were undergoing a big rotation with respect to the geographic and time-averaged geomagnetic poles – the points defining the Earth’s axis of rotation. We suspect that this process, called True Polar Wander and caused by the changing density distribution in the mantle, will have changed the pattern of heat flowing out of the core in such a manner as to cause the magnetic field to first become less stable, with lots of reversals, and then become much more stable – and stop reversing.” –Terra Earth
Book quote: “The decline in Earth’s magnetic field and the global planetary warming trends could be rooted in the same causitive process. Gradient temeprature flucuations within the planet’s interior and rotational speed flucuations within the inner planetary core dynamo could be one of the causes for the rapid disporpotionate heating of the planet- something that has mistakenly been attributed to anthropogenic global warming…dynamo faltering from rapid changes in interior planetary temperatures, is likely accelerating magnetic field reversal and tectonic plate movements.” -The Extinction Protocol (2009), pp. 181, 475

A lot more believable than global warming IMO

  2. Phil says:

Serious stuff here as always thanks for all your hard work!

  3. laseman72 says:

B/s the earth is only 6000 years old.

    • nanoduck says:

Do you have proof? Let’s hear it, please.

      • Devon says:

Wow i know, so laseman, how much science have you studied? There is proof, not theories on different layers in the earth that are much older than 6000 years old. Dinosaurs for example date back to 65 million years old or older. But you probably just think that dinosaurs fossils were made up by scientists, just because they arent included in the bible. I am a christian, and i also believe that man during the time of the bible did not have the technology we do now to even know what happened before them. How ignorant can you people get?? If an asteroid was hurling towards the earth in plain sight would you be so ignorant as to not believe it even if its right in front of your eyes? If you are going to judge and dis on science, most likely you don’t have any clue about what science is. You are on the wrong website.

    • alex says:

i think the most funny thing is most science is based on theory. how should we believe the same people who can’t tell you anything that might happen or the bible the has been 100% correct or every event listed. you want proof how about you tell us proof to disprove the bible thanks for your intelligence.

    • ann says:

Yes, this age may be only 6000 years old, but several ages have passed on this planet. This great creation God has made looks to be coming to the close of this age. Smile because God is not done with the human race yet. Our personal part in the story may come to an end, so live your life well. Give thanks that He has given us this great blessing of life.

Alvin, I have read articles on the magnetic field reversals, and many scientists believe that when it occurs, it has minimal effect on life on earth. What is your take on this– do you think it will have a profound and cataclysmical effect or will be subtle? Somehow I feel that it is definitely not going to be subtle.

    • I don’t think anybody knows what the effects will be because, according to geologists, the last one occurred 780,000 years ago during the Brunhes–Matuyama reversal and nobody was around to write about it. I think we’re witnessing disorientation of planetary processes now as a result of the magnetic migration of the poles. What’s of particular interest to me is their co-relation to previous mass extinction events.

  5. Coyote says:

Alvin: Just saying you’re one brillant mind/soul! Much going on our little globe, be safe.

  6. Isn’t all of this conjecture? How can they REALLY knows what is going on at those depths?? As in so many areas of study (IMHO) one theory spawns another theory, spawns yet another. I think they are all full of “hot” air :)

  7. John says:

Alvin, you have an excellent interpretation of what is going on inside the earth. I think you are on to something.

  8. maro says:

Scientists at the University of Liverpool have done at least one step forward.I agree with them about magnetic field, melting of glaciers,Earth’s core and movement of continents(earthquakes) but it must has been something that has made through the century the Earth’s core quicker movement-something that caused the death of dinosaurs and Neanderthal,Noe’s flood, the sudden death of animals found under the ice in Russia, etc. It has to be some power causing that movement. It may be sun or big planet pulling the Earth’s core!

    Hi Alvin,
I just started reading The 7th Protocol and enjoy the work you do. I was wondering if you put much credence in ocean currents and planetary alignments contributing to secular variation in earth’s magnetic fields? Also, how are weather patterns (related to ocean currents) connected to earth’s magnetic fields? Is an accelerated thermal flux toward the cooling mantle influenced by other factors? I shall read on and my questions will most likely be answered.
Best regards and thanks for keeping us informed.

Mars, the virtually dead planet that has no magnetic field and almost no atmosphere

I don’t put any credence in planetary alignments because there is no science behind it. Gravity doesn’t increase on a body just because a body is aligned behind another. Gravity is determined by mass and distance, and I highlight distance. So the farther and object is away; the less influence it has. I think the Sun plays some role in charging the planets, as I hypothesized in The 7th Protocol. Further reading, may cover some of your points. A magnetic field is the result of complex interactions between thermal energy, electricity (plasma), and magnetism. Thus, the core (interior) and the atmosphere and ionosphere (exterior) are a composite system, and therefore, if the magnetic field is weakening, a terrestrial planet’s atmospheric system also falls apart. The best example of this connection is Mars. Asteroid bombardment from a neighboring exploded planet deactivated Mar’s magnetic field, and consequently blew apart the red planet’s atmosphere. The Martian atmosphere has 1% the density of Earth’s. The more the planet’s magnetic field weakens; the more the climate unravels. Nearly every extinction that happened in Earth’s past involving a polarity reversal; also had some experiences with rather dramatic transitions of climate change.

Are we talking about an Electric Universe?

      • Electric, as in this solar system. I can’t speak for anyone else’s theories in regard to other phenomenona. However, this really should come as no great surprise to the masses. Plasma, magnetisim, and electricity are primary forces that animate matter in the universe.

      • Exactly. Just because physics hasn’t been able to come up with a viable reconciliation of all fields, all of them interact from the subatomic level to the cosmic. And the earth is just one planet orbiting in what can be called our sun’s “biosphere” and our planet swims its way through the solar wind and the sun’s gravitational field. Science still doesn’t understand it, but they are showing that everything is connected with everything else, exactly as many diverse religions and philosophies teach.

      • jehjeh007 says:

What you stated Alvin is so true. I’m having a hard time understanding why other people don’t understand it. The answer is right in front of them and your logic is mostly provable. You don’t have to be a scientist to know that if there are kids in the kitchen, they are the ones that most likely emptied the cookie jar, not the grandpa left to watch them. I believe our center/equator gravity is being stretched out from the earth causing it to thin more at the poles. The mass is the same but the distance is greater at the equator.

  10. Chris Gerber says:

The blog post omitted the last 4 paragraphs in the actual article… Oh well, it is there to read. I just love reading these scientific articles… they are so precise in their explanations of things assuming that the general public has an accurate comprehension of all the scientific terms used. This is way over the heads of the general public because of not explaining the terms (sarcasm… to mean it). Scientists…. btw are always just studying the mechanics of how God operates the universe or how He put things together. Rarely do they get to the heart of the matter and factually base their findings on the fact the God created everything from the get go. Even God himself has said that His ways are not mans ways. So, go “re”- figure from that standpoint and you’ll probably have a more accurate perspective and won’t have to rely on just educated guesses and speculation/hypotheses in some cases.

Very interesting! I just know I am looking forward to fall and I am hoping it will be cool on my camping trip next week. I had to reschedule my camping trip after my wife went into the hospital last month. Better late than never. Praise God she is getting better. He is healing her for sure.

  12. Lori Leigh says:

The Huge Planet / system NIBIRU / PLANET X that has entered our solar system…is what is causing the poles to start to shift.

Never posted here before, but always reading your amazing posts. Now this year, since my first and probably only granddaughter was born in November, 2011, we are thinking of moving to Texas from Washington State. Can you imagine? LOL, I did grow up in North Carolina however, and moved here when pregnant with my daughter, one and only. So therein is the thing, she lives in Texas with my new grandchild, and my husband and I want to be close to her, and she absolutely does not want to return to the liberal progressive ungodly state of Washington. I have to agree with her on that one. So even if we will be a lot hotter there, who knows what may happen here. Living on the juan de fuca faultine on the west coast, lol sitting alongside all these probably soon to be very active volcanoes. Texas sounds good.

  14. Very interesting and well put together article by the researchers. 780,000 years ago? It sounds like we are overdue, but gee, that sounds a bit like the 2012 predictions, doesn’t it? (Wry chuckle!)

    • Dave says:

Yeah 780,000 years ago for the last full reversal, but it appears there have been more recent fluctuations:
“For example, there are significant planetary effects that are known to have occurred around 750 BC – among them, a major unexplained fluctuation in the strength of the Earth’s magnetic field, a major change in the absorption rate of radioactive isotopes by plants that can interfere with radiometric dating techniques, major changes in global climate, and near-universal changes in calendar from a 360-day year to one of 365 days.”

That was possibly an aborted reversal or geomagnetic excursion, I feel there will probably be found similar evidence for an event at the Usselo Horizon –

And maybe at the 40,000 Y.B.P human genetic bottleneck some scientists believe was caused by the Toba eruption.
I personally believe this is linked to the Great Year cycle, precession of the equinoxes, perhaps in tandem with the 41,000 year axial tilt cycle.

  15. Jonas says:

We have nothing to worry about the poles reversing. If they were to start reversing now it may have achieved reversal in 1000 years. We as a species will be long gone before then.

    • Magenta says:

Because the frozen wholly mammoth was found with green grass in its mouth, we know climate change can happen rather quickly.

      • ann says:

Thanks for reminding all of us of this tangible evidence of rapid climate change. That should shake us all out of our cognative dissonance.

    • Actually, Jonas, paleogeology has shown that there have been times when earth’s magnetic poles have reversed quite rapidly, and even times when the geographical poles have changed abruptly, although those instances were probably brought about by external forces acting on the earth’s alignment and orbit.

  16. Wiseguy says:

Again, neverending heatwave… Everytime they forecast colder weather it’s hotter than expected… March heatwave was a precursor for this summer… Winter without cold and snow… Yes, north magnetic pole is moving and we are now in a tropical zone, insane for Canada !!! Apples are early, riverbeds drying, water shortage, Hailstorms destroying crops, droughts, life on earth will never be the same. French revolution began when there was bread shortage, soon there’ll be revolution around the world for wheat high price and food prices.

    • I think that one of the best ways in the world to start mass rioting is to limit the food supply. As you pointed out, it helped lead to the French Revolution. It was also one of the ways that the Roman emperors kept the masses in check, by giving away food or artificially mandating that the prices are lowered. History is replete with tales of unrest and revolt caused by food shortages. It gives us an idea of what to expect when our modern food supply chain falls apart due to natural or man-made causes.

Romalynn ~ if you can handle the heat, drought, and other possible weather issues ~ tornado threat, hurricane threat, and flood threat, it sounds like you would be very happy in Texas.

  18. Wiseguy says:

Alvin, I saw your book The 7th Protocol in eBook. When can we expect The Extinction Protocol in eBook, can’t wait to read it. Thanks
