Geologists warn China’s dam-building frenzy in seismically-active regions is putting millions at risk

July 7, 2012 CHINAAs the last of the turbines at China’s Three Gorges Dam was connected to the grid on Wednesday, a dams debate rages over the fate of the Upper Yangtze River and its main western tributary, the Jinsha River. Known as the “River of Golden Sands,” the Jinsha is slated for a cascade of 25 dams designed to generate as much electricity as four Three Gorges Dams put together. Earlier studies by geologists have highlighted the seismic, safety, and water security risks of out-of-control dam building in this fragile region. Experts also warn against the risk of dam-building in China’s seismically active and flood-heavy southwest, where one dam break could cause a tsunami that creates a domino effect of collapsing dams downstream. This occurred in China in 1975, when a major flood and poor communications caused dam breaks at 62 sites in Henan Province. The catastrophe killed over 26,000 people – more casualties than any other dam failure in history. While such massive floods are rare (this was a once-in-1000-years flood), dam developers have yet to factor in the affects of climate change on extreme weather events such as droughts and floods, which are common in the southwest and have serious implications for dam operation. The valleys in this region, including those formed by the Lancang/Upper Mekong and Nu/Salween, also experience disastrous landslides during the rainy season due to the steepness of the terrain. These can be exacerbated by the clearing of vegetation for dam construction and by the filling and emptying of reservoirs. The fluctuating water levels of the Three Gorges reservoir, for instance, have destabilized hundreds of miles of slopes and triggered massive landslides. A recent warning sign is the deadly mudslide that occurred on June 28, 2012, at the Baihetan Hydropower Station on the lower Jinsha River (it is under construction by the China Three Gorges Project Corporation). The mudslide killed four people and left 36 more missing – all workers and their families at the dam construction zone. –IR

Comments regarding the seismic issues about China’s dams have been posted before and it seems that China is proceeding full speed ahead.
I am just wondering if the Goverment knows this but is willing to take the risk and is willing to accept
the loss in life in the event of dam failure.

Can anyone say “population control”? What’s several thousand people when you have millions living in the country? (But make sure you take care of the military and the elite.) Sad.

  2. I don’t see how their government could not be aware of the problem. My guess is that they know it but are going to proceed anyway. After all, most of the people who would be affected would largely be provincial peasants/workers which China has plenty of. (Don’t forget that the government of China is still communist and therefore not exactly considerate of its peoples needs.) Of very real concern is the fact that China is doing all of this dam building in a highly geologically unstable region that has already produced one large quake under a newly filled reservoir. More of these quakes caused by human short-sightedness will lead to even more quakes as the surrounding faults adjust to the new pressure alignments left by powerful quakes. It must be giving the Chinese seismologists headaches!

  3. Stan Deyo talked to a Maori “seer” years ago who said that when there is a massive dam failure in China, this will be a sign of…let me see if I can remember this exactly…a massive tsunami affecting the Upper Island of New Zealand, which will cause land to rise north of there so that the present North Island will extend much further into the sea…and of course the tsunami will cause much death in the North Island. Anyone interested in this dream-vision can find it on Stan’s site, Standeyo.com, probably under Dream Visions. Stan also had a dream vision about Lake Taupo in the North Island, which is a SuperVolcano.
As Dennis says, it is horrible of the Chinese to go ahead with these dams in order to fund industrial progress, at the expense of traditional farmers. But they have been unable to control their population even with draconian abortion laws… what a nightmare!

I do not think they care about anything but themselves, just like here.. It is a shame to see, but we have one hope and I am sure glad that I am a believer.

    “once-in-1000-years flood”

    uh huh, right.

Sounds like the river near me that a few years ago had two “once in 500 years” floods a couple years apart.

The reason these dams are built is intended for the good of the Chinese people. For the past hundreds of years, the down stream provinces had serious flooding problems costing countless lives; these dams will ensure the majority of the poor people to continue to live a safe normal life. Besides, these dams generates enough clean electricity that even the remote villages can take a step forward and be able to watch a TV or use a fridge for the first time in their life now. Your media will probably not mention this, but the Chinese government is subsidising the villagers (who are extremely poor) to buy electrical appliances that are made in China – which in turns will creat jobs and businesses in many sectors. I do know there are sacrifices when building these dams, but in general, the intention is to help the MAJORITY of their people. Please don’t just focus on the 1 in 1000 chance risk and come to the conclusion that the Chinese government could care less about her people.

Nuclear power plants are almost all built on seismic faults, and intentionally. lol

Warn as much as you want, it will do nothing, nothing.

One starts to pray when one realizes who controls this world, for now and for still a very, very short time. The Beloved is taking His world back, so their dams are damned, anyway.

China Opens Three Gorges Dam sluices as water level is rising rapidly
    http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/photo/2012-07/07/c_131701343_5.htm

“Water pours out of sluices of the Three Gorges Dam in Yichang, central China’s Hubei Province, July 7, 2012. The Three Gorges Dam opened its sluices on Saturday as a flood with the peak flow of 56,000 cubic meters per second has pushed up the water level to more than 151 meters in its reservoir, six meters higher than its flood control level.”
