Star Wars: U.S. Navy to answer hypersonic anti-ship missile threat with lasers

May 4, 2012HIGH TECH – Northrop Grumman Corporation has test fired the first product in its next-generation FIRESTRIKE family of high-energy, solid-state lasers that meet goals for size and weight reduction and ruggedization for operational applications. The lethality testing used a single Gamma chain at short distance in a way that simulated the effects that a laser weapon of several chains aboard a Navy ship could achieve at a range of several miles. “We validated that the laser could produce the amount of energy we predicted, and that the energy would have the effect on the target that we predicted,” said Wildt. “Gamma has equaled or exceeded the performance we achieved in previous slab lasers, but the real advancement here is in packaging and ruggedization for operations in real-world military platforms,” he added. The term “slab laser” refers to a class of high-power, solid-state lasers with a gain medium, or source of atoms that emit light, in the form of a slab about the size of a microscope slide. The components used in the test included the skin of a surplus BQM-74 drone and other parts configured to represent critical internal components. The BQM-74 was formerly produced by Northrop Grumman for the Navy as a representative cruise missile threat and used for testing defensive systems. “The FIRESTRIKE laser, announced in 2008, forms the backbone near-term laser weapon systems from Northrop Grumman. Combined with advanced electro optical and/or infrared sensors, FIRESTRIKE™ line replaceable units and their subsystems can provide military services with active defense, offensive precision strike and enhanced situational awareness capabilities, all in the same weapon system,” Wildt said. –Physics

What was once science fiction is now reality! Holograms, Lasers, Space travel, LRADs, and all of that is all things of what was once considered the future. It won’t be long until those nephilim like Chewbacca or more accurately Goliath are walking around again and people will be bowing to the demon/fallen angels called aliens

I’ve got to wonder if this is just to get the iranians thinking about how effective their anti-ship weapons will be against our fleet over their.

It was only a matter of time before they displayed these weapons. Probably have had them for years being tested and secretly used

  7. Unless we have some of these in the PG those ships over there are screwed when the 1st bomb drops.

    • They said they’re prepared for every possible contingency. One can take this to mean a host of things not discussed in public.

      • True war is war though and being prepared for every contingency is impossible imho.If I learned one thing in the USMC its that the best laid plans go to waste once the 1st shot is fired.Luckily for me it was just training and not actual combat.

      • Iran is no match for the U.S. militarily. It thinks it is…but the reprisals is what Iran should worry about in any hit-and-run tactic on the U.S. Any affliction on the U.S. would have the gravest of consequences for the country and I don’t mean energy installations.

      • No Iran isn’t but Russia and China are and both have said multiple times the an attack on Iran will be considered an attack on them. How serious they are remains to be seen.Taking that chance seems insane to me since US and Israeli intel both say Iran is not building a nuke.

      • I think we need to stop the maddness and march of war before we find out. My fear is that this could set off a chain reaction of everyone bringing out every weapon stored in Pandora’s toy box- most we haven’t even heard of before- and with the U.S., this is especially disconcerting as there has been a generation of scientists engaged in clandestine technology projects and weapons systems since the 1940’s. The U.S. is unrivaled in this field.

      • For sure we got a lot of advanced tech from the Nazi’s at the end of WW2 as did the Russians. Both grabbed all the scientists they could as well.Just got done reading Rise of the Fourth Reich by Jim Marrs its an eye opener.Adding another 70yrs of development to the toys they had back then is plain scary.

      • It is very scary. Just look at the stealth helicopter used in the U.S. Seal Team raid to kill bin Laden in Pakistan. The helicopter went from drawing board, to field testing to deployment without the public ever knowing it even existed.

Google search for “french supersonic missile interception” … Lasers may be the future, but as with all high-energy weaponry (be it lasers, railguns, …) there are problems such as the low rate of fire, the size of the capacitators and the drain on the ship’s power plant. Not to mention the probable short life of that kind of equipment, with lots of downtime / maintenance ?
