49th volcano erupts in 2012: Ecuador’s Sangay volcano unleashes 2 km ash cloud

April 17, 2012 – ECUADOR – During an over-flight on 13 April, an explosion from Sangay volcano was observed at 08:25 local time. It generated an ash and steam column of 2 km above the summit crater. A new vent was detected; both on visible and thermal images, located next to the active dome on the SE flank (Ñuñurqu). The activity in this area has intensified since October, when the last aerial survey had taken place. Extensive lava flows are descending on the SE flank of the dome and reaching the base of the cone. Strong fumarolic activity was seen on the SE flank of the dome and on the S flank of the central crater. –Volcano Discovery

    Hi Alvin,

    I was just wondering if this is normal for this many volcanoes to erupt or if there has been an increase lately in eruptions.

      To give you a point of reference; there were about 50 volcanoes eruptions in all of 2011 that I counted. We’ve just about hit that number in 4 months of 2012. From 1990 to 2008, a span of 18 years, the average number of volcanoes erupting was 66.

        If the tectonic plate agitation continues and the thermal pressures continue to unsettle plates; we can expect more earthquakes. The only two things missing from this equation are intraplate and mega-thrust earthquakes, which up to now, we haven’t seen. Intraplate quakes would occur in the middle of a country like Canda, China, Russia or the US. Mega-thrust earthquakes, on the other hand, happen in subduction zones. They are of the upper 8 and 9.0 range. Predisposed regions for megathrust earthquake events include Alaska, Chile, Japan, Cascadia, Indonesia, South Pacific, the Philippines, Crete and or Mediterranean. What you hope is the tectonic plates reach a new state of equilibrium and settle down but the fact that this happened once represents the breach of a thermodynamic threshold so it may be only the beginning of these earthquake seasons.

    49 active volcanoes? Wow. Add to that all the 6+ earthquakes and it seems like the planet is cracking like an egg. But the Lord did say He would create a new heaven and a new earth.

    At the Smithsonian Global Volcanism site, querying eruptions by year, from 1970 to 2010, there have been on average 61 eruptions (not activity) per year. The eruption has a start date for the year queried. So far in 2011 there have been 56. Your point is accurate, but your numbers are off, if standing by the Smithsonian site.

    I did not say nor do I “think any one government agency would be the sole source of what’s happening on this entire planet when even global news sources don’t index everything that’s happening.” That was a false leap and a wrong assumption on your part. I only wanted to know why you disdain the Smithsonian program and what sources you do use. You answered that.

    My husband was one of the men who lost his life during the 1976 Sangay eruption, 10 days before our daughter’s 7th birthday. It still gives me chills when I learn of volcanic eruptions, such as the latest episode today in Ecuador.
