Strong 6.2 earthquake strikes near west Indonesia, no tsunami

April 15, 2012INDONESIAOfficials say a strong earthquake measuring magnitude 6.2 has struck off the coast of western Indonesia but there is no danger of a tsunami. The U.S. Geological Survey says Sunday’s quake was centered about 400 miles (650 kilometers) southwest of Banda Aceh, the capital of Aceh province, at a depth of 9 miles (15 kilometers). Indonesian meteorological official Suharjono says there is no threat of a tsunami. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage. Two powerful quakes measuring magnitude 8.6 and 8.2 triggered a tsunami watch on Wednesday in more than two dozen nations and island territories, from Australia and India to as far off as Africa. –WGME

    Thank you for your detailed reports. I visited the usgs site and counted 65!! earthquakes ranging from mag. 5.0-8.6 just in the last 7 days! That’s 65 major earthquakes in 7 days.

      Just keep an eye on the Sunda Straight near Karakatau.
