Japan’s Mt. Fuji volcano awakens after 300 years- increased risk of an eruption warns scientist

February 19, 2012JAPANReports are appearing about unrest and signs of a possible awakening of Mt Fuji volcano in Japan. According to a report which includes an unclear photo of the area, a row of new craters, the largest 50 m in diameter, has appeared on the eastern flank of the volcano at 2200 m elevation. Steam was observed erupting from these vents. The observation joins other signs suggesting a gradual reawakening: A swarm of earthquakes including 4 of magnitude 5 have occurred northeast of Mt Fuji on and after 28 January. An earlier 6.4M quake occurred under the volcano on 15 March 2011. The report also mentions increased activity from a fumarole vent at 1500 m elevation and hot spring areas at the eastern flank observed since 2003. These locations seem to be aligned geographically, and are probably connected. Dr. Masaaki Kimura of Ryukyu University is quoted to admit that there is an increased risk of an eruption on the eastern flank and that the status of the volcano should be closely monitored. Mt. Fuji last erupted in 1707, some 305 years ago. –Volcano Discovery

Kyushu Island’s volcanoes had some eruptions since the 9.0 Tohoku earthquake. With the seabed shifting 50meters where the plates meet, Mt. Fuji must have some pressure built up.

  5. Joseph m. zullo says:

Well As quote the Josh Bernstien study of Pompeii the signs are definietely representign an event.

  6. EricTGS says:

Some friends went hiking near the mountain and they said the ground trembled for a second or two. Either that’s true or they’re just lying, but I can’t help thinking that this is somehow related..

  7. Albert says:

    Crazy times!!

  8. Fuji is the world’s most perfect mountain. It will be sad if it is changed by an eruption especially one like Mt St. Helen.

  9. shootingstar says:

with the new vents and fault line of thirty meters could mean nothing. as land shifts about 5 cenmtrs ev year we could see a new volcano grow out from the old one like Anak krakatau in indonesia or the fact that yellowstone has sprung up in dif places over thosands of years.

Yes, it would be a shame if Fuji changed it’s shape, but I think it would be more of a shame to think that 1000s of people could die or lose their homes if an event took place. Places like Gotemba, Hakone, Fujinomiya and Kofu are all at risk.
