6.3 magnitude earthquake strikes Molucca Sea

November 14, 2011 - JAKARTAA 6.3-magnitude undersea earthquake struck Indonesia’s eastern North Maluku province on Monday in the Molucca Sea. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, and no tsunami alerts were issued by the NOAA. The earthquake occurred at 11:05 am (0405 GMT) with an epicenter 69 kilometers (42 miles) southwest of Labuha city, the Indonesian Meteorological and Geophysics Agency said. It struck at a depth of 19.4 kilometers. The US Geological Survey initially recorded the earthquake’s magnitude at 6.6 but later downgraded the quake to a 6.3. Indonesia sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity.  –The Extinction Protocol

  1. Hi Alvin – now he’s stuck in Vail (flight was cancelled yesterday). I’m not sure which side of the rockies I would prefer him to be on now

regarding the recent 3.7 in SD — http://neic.usgs.gov/neis/eq_depot/2003/eq_030525/
East of the Rockies, an earthquake can be felt over an area as much as ten times larger than a similar magnitude earthquake on the west coast. A magnitude 4.0 eastern U.S. earthquake typically can be felt at many places as far as 100 km (60 mi) from where it occurred, and it infrequently causes damage near its source.

Do the distances on this one seem to be within those numbers? (one direction looked like it reached well past it)

it’s far enough away from the New Madrid fault line — yes…. right?
