Rare 4.7 magnitude earthquake stuns residents of Oklahoma

November 5, 2011OKLAHOMA CITY, OK — A rare magnitude 4.7 earthquake shook the central US state of Oklahoma early Saturday, the US Geological Survey reported. The epicenter of the tremor, which occurred at 2:12 am (0712 GMT), was located nine kilometers (six miles) north of the town of Prague and about 75 km (46 miles) east of Oklahoma City. The earthquake was shallow- 4.9 km or just 3 miles below the surface. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage. Residents reported buildings and houses were shaken by the incident. Some people were awakened from sleep. A flurry of aftershocks has followed the initial earthquake, as both the state and its residents continue to reel from the seismic event. The earthquake was the 3rd largest in the state’s history and was felt as far away as Plano, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, and Levanworth, Kansas. Some days ago, I wrote about the seismic awakening of Oklahoma. You can find the article here. The Extinction Protocol
According to the USGS, that first aftershock was a 3.5-magnitude temblor northeast of Shawnee. The next two aftershocks, one at 2:44 a.m. and the other at 2:50 a.m., were 2.7-magnitude. That was followed by the most recent 3.3-magnitude quake. Prague resident and KOCO photojournalist Sam Muzny said he was watching television when the initial earthquake shook at 2:12 a.m. “Everything fell off the shelves,” he said. “The refrigerator moved six inches. We are picking up the debris. Duration was 50 seconds, and we could not stand up.” –KOCO

““The refrigerator moved six inches.” :0
While that may not result in serious damage, it sure would get one’s attention.

Yes, not surprising. reason why is back in 2005, there were problems with natural gas explosions in this state,in Kingfisher County for one. Actually, at the time, it was a world-wide issue of reports of the smell of natural gas. However, the report was that magma was rising, pushing the gas upward. Some speculated it may be magma moving underground from yellowstone.

Interesting point here…..The reports also said that there were the reports unexplained gas smell in New York and New Jersey at the same time.

Another interesting point here: Is not Oklahoma not located within the bread basket of the USA. and is a major producer of wheat?

Much going on now EP family

I believe the USA is going to get the big one very soon somewhere between Virginia and Oklahoma there is just too many unusual quakes along those areas,I hate to even say this, but I have a very strong feeling , that a larger event is very near.

    • And I hate to say this too, but I agree with you david. For years, everyone watched California and the West Coast. Although that is also still quite active, with all of this instability going on, I am concerned about New Madrid. I live in North Central Ohio and [so far] we are fairly save when it comes to seismic activity, although we do deal with snow storms, ice storms, and tornadoes. But if the New Madrid ruptures, I believe the majority of the area from the Rocky Mountains to the East Coast will feel it and many areas could possibly have significant damage, especially since we are not prepared.

Stay prepared; Stay watchful; Stay safe. Thank you Alvin for keeping us informed.

Woke me up and I am a deep sleeper. My husband yelled earthquake. The whole bed shook and oil in my candle burner spilt everywhere. I am in Tulsa. Can’t believe it. First quake for me.

  5. JerseyCynic says:

would this have any effect on the new madrid fault line area?

    • No. However, tension within the continental U.S. is mounting if tectonic plates all over the world are being perturbed by the current seismic dynamism. And that has larger implications considering America has what amounts to two supervolcanoes with Yellowstone and Long Valley. The continent is a failed rift land mass and perhaps hides unknown geological forces that may have originally triggered this event.

Alvin,I was hoping Ok. might be an option for migration due to earthquakes…guess not.

      • We’ll see how this all plays out. Part of the problem with increased large-scale seismic events in the U.S. is this:

        NGN
U.S. massive natural gas pipeline network

        Nuke plants
Map of nuclear power plants in the U.S.

I suggest you get a continental map of the U.S. and high-light the ‘hot-spot’, (nuclear plant locations, volcanic and seismic risk areas) and plan multiple transportation route options in the event of a natural disaster. It’s the kinda stuff, no one thinks about during the break-out of a crisis.

Alvin, Dennis E. here: Sunday morning 08:55 EST Fall-Fallback Day on the clock.
Having my first cup of coffee with EP today.

I looked at the maps you posted. In regard to the US natural gas pipeline system, I am far better to stay where I am at now. In regard to the Nuclear Plant Issue, you can run but you can’t hide. Who knows where the wind blows? Or, when it will blow? Unless a person has to leave, by goverment direction, I would stay in the shelter I already have. Radioactivity is an invisible assassin. You can’t see it, you can’t smell it and its range is nearly unlimited.
I think the public needs to be more educated about radioactivity other than about the effects from exploding nuclear warheads.

        Have a nice day

I googled Prague OK and fracking and once again, we may have found the smoking bullet! Jobs from hydraulic fracturing operations are badly needed but I have concerns about the possibility
of a monster earthquake being released by man’s arrogance and short sightedness. Oil/natural gas companies are drilling deep into the ground and then out horizontally. By forcing millions of gallons water mixed with chemicals into the ground, they are able to break up the rock and release natural gas deposits. Many of the earthquakes we read about are a result of natural stresses on our planet but more and more, the earthquakes I believe are a direct result of fracking operations.

    • denise says:

Sorry to report to you, the oil/gas industries have been fracking for years now. I worked for a gas company and we preform fracking all over this country. A lot of new wells and fracking are being performed right now in a new shale found in Ohio, North Dakota and New York.

For those living in “diverse places” you might want to do some seismic retrofitting. When I lived in California, I kept my fine crystal under the bed and made sure there was nothing tall near the bed that could fall and kill me during my sleep. Bookcases can be secured to the wall. If your kids sleep in bunk beds, check out railings, etc.

I lived through the Sylmar quake in 1971 and it was quite the scary ride. Be safe!

  8. K80 says:

It was spooky happened at about 2:13AM the whole house shook for about 50-sec. that would be the 1st one that we have been able to notice here in Tulsa.

  9. Carole Johnson says:

Alvin, where can I find a copy of your illustration: U.S. massive natural gas pipeline network? Is there a http?

  10. Rhonda says:

To David and Irene I believe you are right. I use to live almost on top of the New Madrid in a place called Union City TN when I was young. But once the 1st quake hit after we moved there my Mom moved again away from that area. If you know where Union City is then you know that it is very close to Reelfoot Lake which formed when the Mississippi River flowed backwards after a major earthquake hit the area. It takes a really BIG earthquake to change the flow of a river and that is one big river to change.

    WHOA!!!

  13. Jory says:

Yeah we just had another one, that seemed a lot rougher than the one we had at 212am… this one happened about 20 minutes ago… approximately 10:58pm on 11/5/11.

  14. Me says:

just had a 5.2 in Sparks, OK. that one was creepy. even for an eq veteran. :( lasted at least 30 seconds. i’d say. perhaps i’m exaggerating… but it was long. I understand it was pretty shallow.

  15. Jory says:

Just found out the earthquake we had about 1058pm tonight was a 5.2 magnitude (measured near Sparks, OK) and I’m in OKC.

  16. Kerry says:

OK, just felt the new 5.2 earthquake in OK! It was so strong, it shook the house and rattled the windows for about a minute. What is going on?!?

  17. Me says:

    correction. it’s being called a 5.6 now.

  18. Hannah says:

Just felt the 5.2 earthquake in Tulsa, the floor shook back and forth and the whole house vibrated loudly. Noticed that Arkansas has been having quakes too, just read they had a 5.8 on 31st Oct yet didnt see or hear about it at the time. The sun is flipping out too. This is getting weird
