Double earthquakes strike northern Sumatra near Lake Toba supervolcano

June 14, 2011Northern Sumatra, IndonesiaTwo moderate back-to-back earthquakes have struck the northern Sumatra region just south of the Lake Toba super-volcano. The earthquakes measured a 5.3 and 5.6 magnitude and ranged in depth from 8 to 22 km.  There is no evidence the quakes are related to the super-volcano but we are monitoring the region to make sure this is not a precursor of a potential swarm. According to geologists, Lake Toba is believed to have erupted more than 77,000 years ago and was a VEI 8 event that superseded even the eruption of its sister Yellowstone.
June 14, 2011KUALA LUMPUR - Two earthquakes hit northern Sumatra on Tuesday morning, sending tremors that were felt in Selangor, Malacca, Negri Sembilan, Perak, Putrajaya and Kuala Lumpur. The first 5.5- magnitude earthquake hit Sumatra at 8.08 am and the second 5.6 -magnitude quake hit the same place at 11.01 am on Tuesday. Calls came pouring in from Selayang Hospital, KLCC building and other high rises in the Klang Valley as many residents ran out of their buildings. However, there was no tsunami threat, said the Malaysian Meteorological Department. A fire official said the tremors were more intense from the eighth floor upwards, but added that there were no reports of damage. – The Strait Times

Oh wow if this does indeed turn into another super volcano eruption or leads up to it I will be speechless for days and days. What could this do Alvin just saying if it did turn out to be connected tho this super volcano? I mean th effects on the earth?

I’m kinda alone in my life with I mean people around me who have any care to what is happening around the world. Christ is with me but it’s difficult to watch it unfold and the naysayers just keep inflicting me with their tongue full of vice and evil. I am surrounded by drunks, drug addicts, non believers who laugh at my faith and those who call me weak and foolish for believing in Christ but I don’t care what they say my faith is strong and the only thing that has saved me is my faith and faith alone.

    God Bless

    • It’s something to monitor at this point Luca. I don’t see anything to worry about now and it would raise the same concerns if two strong quakes erupted near Yellowstone. You have a lot of courage and you’re stronger for overcoming the difficulties of your environment. It’s an inspiring message.

    • Hello !Sorry for my English, I am French; … Hold on to your faith, it may help you in days to come and nevermind those who try to turn you into an underdog. I am no believer myself but I watch and think and have come to the conclusion that, even though it may not be World’s end, many catastrophic events are about to happen. So watch and be ready to help, as I am trying to do, even though to me God does not exist, but that’s only a detail in the story … Don’t forget to store food, water, etc … according to the space at your disposal !
Meanwhile : don’t forget to enjoy yourself and try to protect living things, they are worth it

  2. Wiseguy says:

Alvin, I don’t think you were expecting such a fast change in earth volcanicity. Mother Nature is always full of surprises.

  3. Raven says:

Not good Alvin…not good at all :(

  4. ehayip says:

yeah this the closest epicenter to the toba lake…

  5. Luke says:

I dont know. Is 80,000 years enough time to refill the magma chamber?

    • Definitely. Though, I take issue with the Earth being that old. There’s supposed to be 1000 times more lava in the planet than there is thought to be water in the oceans. Fire rules the life of terrestial planet Earth.

    • NickKo says:

Curious….. We have probably all read the reports of the ground rising and surging, in the area of the Yellowstone caldera. I would imagine that this is due to the Magma chamber refilling over time.

Is anyone doing any similar “geologic measurements” of the ground height in the area of Toba ?
I understand that USGS is monitoring the ground rise at Yellowstone, is the Indonesian Gov’t. or similar agency doing this at Toba ?

      - Nick

  6. Beano says:

These quakes are aligned on the great Sumatera Fault. There are no active volcanos in the immediate area.
There is an active soltafura on the west side of Toba.
There is an expectation of a medium to large size disturbance sometime along the Great Sumatera fault after the 2004 Aceh quake and the 2005 Nias quake. – according to some seismologists an event is overdue. Bill McGuire alarmed the residents of Sumatera with his prediction of a Mag 8 plus along the Great Sumatera fault.

Indonesia has the most active volcanos of any country. The Indonesian Geophysical Institute is limited to what it can monitor. There is no “noise” at Toba so no close monitoring. Note that a Volcano just north east of Toba – Sinabung erupted recently – first for over 100 years.
