Trigger: 7.2 earthquake and massive tremors hit Honshu Japan

7.2 earthquake strikes Honshu Japan at the shallow depth of 14 km on March 9, 2011. Tsuanami warnings were issued for the region. Large aftershocks have followed in quick succession behind the quake.

March 9, 2011JAPAN - TOKYO—A magnitude 7.2 earthquake hit off Japan’s northeastern coast Wednesday, shaking buildings hundreds of miles away in Tokyo and triggering a small tsunami. There were no immediate reports of significant damage or injuries. The quake struck at 11:45 a.m. local time and was centered about 90 miles (150 kilometers) off the northeastern coast—about 270 miles (440 kilometers) northeast of Tokyo—at a depth of about 5 miles (8 kilometers), Japan’s meteorological agency said. A 24-inch (60-centimeter) tsunami reached the coastal town of Ofunato, in Iwate prefecture, with other towns reporting smaller waves reaching shore about 30 minutes after the quake. “We have confirmed that small tsunami have come up on the shores, but we have no reports of damage at this point,” said Shinobu Nagano, an emergency and disaster response official in Iwate. “We are still trying to determine the impact of the quake.” Some train lines in the area were temporarily stopped after the quake, but they were restarted shortly after noon. Tohoku Electric Power said there was no damage at its nuclear power facility in the region. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii said a Pacific-wide tsunami was not expected. There was a 6.3 magnitude aftershock shortly after the main quake, the meteorological agency said. In Tokyo, office buildings swayed and creaked for about 30 seconds during the quake.”  -Mercury News
Trigger: Three days ago, I warned that tectonic plates across the globe were stressed and were awaiting a trigger. It has arrived. The stress-force of this 7.2 magnitude quake was extremely powerful and has erupted at the shallow depth of less than 15 km. The quake was strong enough to jar tectonic plates across the globe and have a particular force-effect on divergent pressures along the North American and Eurasian plate. The quake has sent seimsographs across the planet reeling into the deep black. Telemetry data from seismographs below indicate the powerful force of the quake that has undoubtedly buckled the sea-floor off the far coast of Japan.

  1. Hey Alvin, wanted to get some input from you in regards to the Cascadia fault off the coast of Oregon. With the recent activity off the coast at the plate boundry between the Pacific and San Juan DeFuca plates and the more recent 7.2 off Honshu, can we reasonably expect something bigger from the Cascadia superfault anytime soon. Or just your oppinion on how stressed that area is.

Thanks again for all your time and efforts, it is appreciated by many.

    • CS, yes the region is stressed and there’s danger of a major quake in the near future. Continual agitation along the Pacific Plate and signs of trouble brewing in Kamchatka are signs of growing unrest along the Western sector. It’s hard to say when the Cascadian Subduction Zone will go spastic but I’ll try to post as many warns signs as possible. Of the most powerful earthquakes to come in the future- the Northwest quadrant of America/Alaska has a 30% chance of being struck. So the odds are greater for the most destructive quakes of the 9.0 range or higher to rattle this region than it is for California. Don’t know if you saw this post but here’s a little more info below. Thanks as always for the support. I appreciate readers like yourself as well.

Wow, tons of tension still pent up. Within the last hour there has been a 6.0 and most recently a 6.3 at a very shallow depth. Hope everything stays intact there.

Thanks for the info on the Cascadia, have family along the coast and want them to be aware of the danger.

  5. Not at this juncture from what I see. Will the Philippines islands survive the maximum stage of these earthchanges? In my opinion, highly unlikely…

i see the disaster which is happening in japan. For this only human being is responsible.
